David Steven goes to the British Council’s Cambridge Seminar and is disappointed to find that Zadie Smith isn’t particularly sunny on the subject of her celebrity or on the state of British publishing in general. Frankly, if she didn’t seem at least a little bit conflicted, I’d be tempted to write her off as insufferable and unthinking. But she is neither of those things. She is a serious writer whose work, I expect, will become even more thoughtful and interesting over the years.
