Welsh boxes; Flanagan says nice girls don’t

Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting, Porno) has taken up boxing after moving to San Francisco. (He’s in training for a charity boxing event that will be held in London next year.) In the San Francisco Chronicle, Welsh talks about writing for London’s Daily Telegraph. He calls it “the most traditional right-wing paper in Britain” and says “I think they got me in to spice things up. All it did was alienate the existing crowd.” (Via Sarah Weinman.)

The Fold Drop comments on Caitlin Flanagan’s outrageous review (also in The Atlantic) of The Between Boyfriends Book: A Collection of Cautiously Hopeful Essays. Flanagan’s thesis? “That men are delighted to have sex with women they barely know but are skittish about marrying ones who offer themselves too freely is a fact of life that women have understood down through the ages.”
