My favorite new publisher is Vertical, Inc., an aptly named company that translates cool literature and genre fiction from Japan. This Spring they published the horror novel Ring, the source of a popular Japanese (and American) film. They’re also bringing over an eight volume manga biography of the Buddha, written by Osamu Tezuka (Astroboy, Metropolis).

But my favorite so far is Outlet by Randy Taguchi, which is due out later this month. Outlet was an enormously popular book despite her rather flat writing style, because the subject matter is so…unusual. It’s already been made into a movie. It’s very hard to describe the book; it’s an autobiographical account that gives way to mystical sexual shamanism.

There is no American equivalent to Randy Taguchi, but imagine a cross between Germaine Greer, Fanny Fern, and Shirley Maclaine
