Thou shalt not kill [except for oil]

Frank McCourt, Irish-American author of Angela’s Ashes, spoke with three other writers at an event organized by Marie Carlson, the wife of Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Oscar Hijuelos, in support of “the compassionate sensibilities that John Kerry and John Edwards represent.”

McCourt denounced a group of bishops for implying that Kerry, a Catholic, does not represent the conservative values of the church because of his stance on issues like abortion, gay marriage and stem cell research, and for suggesting that churchgoers prioritize these issues in determining whom they will vote for this November. Said McCourt:

What’s particularly intriguing is that they have the balls to speak like that considering what’s been happening in the Catholic church in the last few years. . . .

It confuses me. Thou shalt not kill a fetus, but they don’t have anything to say about war. Thou shalt not kill a young man of 24. They don’t say anything about that . . . .
