They called it Eros & Thanatos

Kings of Infinite Space takes place in Lamar, Texas, Hynes’ “skewed version of Austin.” If you’ve ever been to Austin, you know that Lamar is the name of a long avenue that bisects the city.

Like the hero in Kings of Infinite Space, I used to be a long-term temp in Austin, making 8 bucks an hour. I had moved to the city under the mistaken impression that it would put me in close proximity to Cormac McCarthy (who lived something like eight hours away) and long-haired metal boys (actually, that part was true). I worked for a huge mortgage company, where I got dizzying on the calculator and dizzy from the copier.

I lived with two friends in a cockeyed rental off South Lamar. Around the corner was a storefront that housed a porn shop and Martinez Taxidermy. The window display at the taxidermy shop featured a frozen cougar, some sort of bird of prey, and a beaver.
