John Farmer’s 1900 book, The Public School Word Book, collected the “words, phrases, names and allusions to customs [that] are now, or have been, peculiar to English public school life.” Schott’s Original Miscellany provides a sampling of the slang, including:

Abroad (Winchester): Convalescing, out of the sick room.

Beards! (The Leys): An exclamation of surprise.

Clipe (General): To tell tales.

Coxy (General): Stuck up, conceited.

Muzz (Westminster): To read.

Wet bob (Eton): A rower.

Varmint (General): Good, smart.
