Hemingway fled, Fitzgerald couldn’t get out fast enough, but there’s this to be said for Midwestern winters: they do encourage writers to stay at their desks (preferably with a space heater.) Some of them protest , others glory in it. The other night Stu Dybek told about being in Chicago to do a reading from his first book of poetry in twenty years. Some Japanese tourists being blown nearly horizontal asked if he’d take their picture and afterward, while everyone bowed, kept exclaiming in delight “Windy City! Windy City!” Attitude is everything.
