Lehmann likes Going Out

Although I’ve checked in at Scarlett Thomas’ online diary from time to time since Emma pointed me last summer to her funny rant about writing for the Independent on Sunday books section (scroll to the middle of the June 23, 2003, entry), I’ve yet to read her novels.

Chris Lehmann gives Thomas’ U.S. debut, Going Out, a respectful review in Book World. According to Lehmann, Thomas “nimbly reimagines” Baum’s The Wizard of Oz as “a meditation on the inward dimension of the Oz quest: the restless, oft-thwarted striving after true feeling in a world of strategic self-protection and blank media saturation.”
