Laurie Anderson sums up human condition in one sentence

Last night, throwing out some things I wrote when Max and I moved here in fall, 1999, I came across notes on Laurie Anderson’s stage adaptation of Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. I was struck by Ms. Anderson’s explanation for her attraction to the novel:

Being a somewhat dark person myself, I fell in love with the idea that the mysterious thing you look for your whole life will eventually eat you alive.
