Jonathan Strange, Hollywood franchise

Studios are fighting for the right to adapt Susanna Clarke’s longlisted debut novel Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, the story of “two feuding magicians set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars.”

According to Variety, “Lord of the Rings producer New Line, Harry Potter studio Warner Brothers, DreamWorks and Sony are among the studios in contention.” The fact that Clarke is at work on a follow-up novel makes the book “even more tempting to filmmakers as a potential franchise.”
