Walrus intrigue

Saturday’s Globe & Mail (thanks, Air Canada) reports that Robert Fulford initially heralded but now denounces The Walrus, a magazine marketed as Canada’s answer to The New Yorker, The Atlantic and Harper’s. Fulford calls the magazine “pretentious,” “visually uninteresting,” and composed of “badly managed lumps of prose, compilations of unremarkable facts and obvious ideas, put together without wit or skill.” He blames editor Ken Alexander.

As Fulford’s attack was published (first in the July issue of Toronto Life), rumors circulated that a short story by Fulford’s son-in-law was to appear in the The Walrus’ Summer Reading Issue. The issue, now available at newsstands, does not include the story.
