In an interview with The Age, ZZ Packer offers her perspective on M.F.A. programs:

“Writing programs are criticised for producing cookie-cutter writing, but that’s the worst of them,” she says. “They are useful if you go in thinking you’ll use the time to write and use the people around you as aids. They’re like modern-day writing salons but a bit more democratic. Writing can’t be taught, but you can coax it out.”
