Anna Karenina revived

It’s hard to be cynical about the latest Oprah Book Club selection: the Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky translation of Anna Karenina. The translators deserve every dime they get from those 800,000 additional new copies. And maybe translations will get a boost more generally.

But can Oprah really convince the U.S. reading public to read a foreign novel, even a classic one? Signs point to yes. Today its Amazon sales rank is five.
