If you need to buy clothes, buy them soon. The sales tax exemption for clothing and shoes costing less than $110 expires* effective statewide on June 1. What’s more, in case you haven’t been keeping up, the sales tax rate is going up to 8 5/8% (from 8 1/4%) in New York City.
[insert tirade about regressive taxes and poverty here]
*The full-time exemption is being temporarily replaced by two one-week clothing exemptions and is scheduled to become effective again on June 1 of next year. I’m willing to bet it’s not coming back next year, though.
