Private: Favorite sentences

Dispensing with the randomness of the sentence exercise I mentioned earlier, the good people at I Love Books want you to post your favorite sentence from a novel.

When I woke up this morning, I was thinking of one of my favorite lines from Padgett Powell’s short story “The Winnowing of Mrs. Schuping.” I don’t have it quite right, I know, but I always remember it as “There was no falling-down insurance for houses, an actuarial nicety that flabbergasted and enraged Mrs. Schuping.”
