Private: Dept. of Sour Grapes

Tomorrow, I’m teaching a workshop about how to submit stories to literary journals at the Penn Writers Conference. Mostly, I’m going to talk about not embarrassing yourself in cover letters (“Do you like stories about humour that are also a little bit sad?”), but I’m also going to do a lot of talking about rejection letters, about how they shouldn’t get you down and all that.

I’ll probably tell them that this story, before it ended up here, was rejected a dozen times, including once by means of an unsigned photocopied poem about plums and how my story wasn’t one of the sweeter plums.

If you email me and tell me about your worst rejection letter, maybe I’ll talk about it tomorrow.
