Code Red

The plot of M. Night Shyamalan’s new movie The Village is strikingly similar to that of Running Out of Time, a young adult novel by Margaret Peterson Haddix.

We saw The Village last weekend and overall, I was disappointed. The dialogue was truly terrible and most of the performances, with the exception of Ron Howard’s daughter’s, were ridiculously overwrought. I loved the way the film looked, though, and I really liked the idea of the thing but, unfortunately, the execution was all off. So maybe this novel is worth checking out.

I will say, too, that I felt the movie was a pretty clear allegory of the Bush administration’s current fear-mongering, right down to the characters’ over-the-top totally-freaked-out reactions to the “bad colour” (red). Then again, I keep seeing fear-mongering allegories everywhere so maybe it’s just me.
